AstraZeneca has warned about a potential over-use of Nexium, the world’s top-selling drug, and about a possible shortage of the drug, both of which are expected to affect sales in the second half of the year.
The stock market was valued at £2.20 a share, up 5% from a year earlier, and the stock was down 0.6% to £13.75 a share.
“The market has not been very profitable for AstraZeneca,” AstraZeneca Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Pascal Soriot said in a statement. “We are concerned that the stock market will continue to suffer as we move into the second half of the year. We remain concerned that the market will continue to suffer as we move into the second half of the year.”
The stock is down 3.8% to £21.50 a share, up 0.6% from a year earlier.
The stock had fallen 4% in the past week to £19.58 in London. It’s down 0.5% to £13.50 a share.
The London-based company, which sells its own drugs for pain and gastrointestinal disorders, said it would offer AstraZeneca a generic version of Nexium for the rest of the year.
AstraZeneca said the stock had fallen to £18.20 a share in London, up 6% in the past week.
“We are concerned that the stock market will continue to suffer as we move into the second half of the year,” Dr Graham Jackson, a consultant who runs a gastroenterology clinic for AstraZeneca, said in a statement.

AstraZeneca has said it expects sales to hit $1.3bn by the end of the year, up 5% on the same period last year. It said it expects the stock to return to its low level.

The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker has been trying to block the sale of the generic version of AstraZeneca’s pain-killer Nexium from the market.
The pharmaceutical giant, which is based in New York, is also expected to sell a generic version of the drug for $4bn in Europe, the company said.
The global drugmaker said it was planning to market the drug in the first half of the year. It was seeking a price cut of $50bn in the quarter. The drugmaker said it would also sell the generic version for a lower price of $10bn.
“This is a market where the prices of the drugs face competition, and the companies are trying to have the best deal possible,” AstraZeneca’s Chief Executive Officer Pascal Soriot said.
AstraZeneca said the price cut would come from the company’s own research and development division, which sells its own drugs.

AstraZeneca’s shares fell by more than 15% to £19.67 on Friday, following the London-based drugmaker’s own price cut.
It has said it will not sell the drug but will continue to market it.
AstraZeneca said the company was “committed to a long-term strategy” to address the problem, and “is committed to delivering innovative medicines to the patients we serve.”
The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker said the company would be interested in selling the drug from its own research and development division, as it had previously done.
The European drugmaker is seeking to block the sale of the generic version of the drug from the market.
